Amid a recent spike in Phoenix homicides, a higher percentage of cases are going unsolved. The clearance rate of murders is about the same as the national average, but it used to be much higher.

A 30-year-old man fatally stabbed his 81-year-old grandmother in Chandler on Sunday, officials said.

Officials said the man stabbed the elderly woman at an apartment complex near Price Road and Chandler Boulevard at about 3:30 a.m.

Chandler police found the woman dead in the apartment later in the morning. Her grandson, whom officials have not yet identified, was taken into custody at a “nearby location” shortly after, police said.

A spokesman for the Chandler Police Department did not provide any additional details and said the alleged murder was still under investigation.
