A pedestrian in west Phoenix who was shot multiple times from a passing vehicle late Thursday returned fire before the driver sped off, Phoenix police said.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. on 43rd Avenue just south of Thomas Road, police said.

Witnesses reported seeing someone in a small vehicle shooting at a man walking on 43rd Avenue, Phoenix police said.

He then shot back at the vehicle, police said.

Officers found the pedestrian on the street with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. He was taken to a hospital but his condition was not available late Thursday.

Police are searching for the other shooter and the vehicle, but no descriptions were available, officials said.
