A 27-year-old man who police suspected of armed robbery and attempted carjacking was found by police to have killed himself Tuesday afternoon before being found by officers on a Loop 202 onramp in Mesa.

Undercover detectives were conducting surveillance of a man suspected of armed robbery around 3:30 p.m., according to a Mesa police news release. He drove a white Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on Broadway Road and continued onto the southbound ramp of the Loop 202 Freeway.

The man stopped the truck, got out the vehicle and attempted to carjack a gold Buick car on the freeway ramp, according to police.

The carjacking was unsuccessful, and the man returned back to his vehicle.

U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force members and Mesa police undercover detectives blocked the suspect’s truck with their own vehicles.

When they approached the vehicle to take the man into custody, he was found unresponsive with a handgun in his lap, police officials said in the release. He was pronounced dead at the location by the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

Investigators later declared the man shot himself with a handgun found inside of the vehicle, moments before police arrived.

No officers discharged firearms during the incident, according to police.

The investigation was still ongoing, and the suspect’s name was not released.
