A pedestrian is in extremely critical condition after being hit by a city bus Wednesday afternoon in downtown Phoenix, fire officials said.

The crash occurred at about 4:20 p.m at First Avenue and Van Buren Street, said Phoenix police Sgt. Armando Carbajal

A 34-year-old man was struck as the bus was turning south onto Van Buren Street, he said. The man was crossing from west to east, he added.

Police were investigating whether the man was in a crosswalk at the time, Carbajal added.

Fire Department Capt. Rob McDade said the man was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries in extremely critical condition.

The intersection was restricted to traffic while police investigated.
