Authorities are investigating what they called the suspicious death of a man found in a Mesa apartment Saturday night.

Officers conducted a welfare check overnight when someone called police to say he hadn’t heard from a relative living near Southern Avenue and Dobson Road, said Detective Steve Berry, a Mesa police spokesman. When they arrived at the apartment, they found a man’s body inside.

Berry said the man had suffered no immediately apparent trauma, but the scene was “suspicious” and detectives were called to the residence.

Further investigation determined the cause of death, and the case is now being handled as a homicide, Berry said.

No other details, including a description of anyone police were seeking, were immediately available. Detectives were working Sunday morning to notify the man’s next of kin.
