A man died Sunday morning while hiking in Deem Hills Recreation Area in north Phoenix, officials said.
The Phoenix Fire Department responded to reports about 11:40 a.m. of an unresponsive adult male hiker at the Sonoran Desert park near Happy Valley Road and Interstate 17, according to fire Capt. Rob McDade.
Rescue teams found the hiker dead at the trailhead, McDade said.
They were working to bring the hiker off the trail. The man’s name and age were not immediately released.
It was not initially clear whether the man’s death was heat-related.
The temperature at Deem Hills around noon was already 105 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, which issued an excessive heat warning Sunday that advised residents to stay indoors.
The trails at Deem Hills Recreation Area are rated moderate to difficult.
Phoenix police are investigating the incident. No other details were immediately available.
