A driver charged in the death of another motorist in a Mesa crash last summer is in custody after a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

Felix Garcia, 41, was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal traffic accident that occurred July 28, 2016, near the 1300 block of North Mesa Drive.

Court records say Garcia was traveling south in a blue Chevrolet Envoy on North Mesa Drive when he veered out of his lane and struck a northbound vehicle head-on. The driver of the other vehicle, Jo Ann Darling, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garcia and passengers in both vehicles were transported to hospitals for injuries suffered in the crash.

Garcia told police he remembered “hitting something and rolling” when asked about the collision, court records say.

Police noted Garcia had bloodshot eyes with dilated pupils and an elevated pulse in addition to his breath smelling of marijuana, court records say. Court records say Garcia told police he used medical marijuana and smoked the previous night.

He was subsequently subject to a search warrant that allowed police to draw his blood, court records say.

The 41-year-old was charged with one count of manslaughter and three counts of aggravated assault in the collision.

Garcia is currently being held on a $100,000 bond at a Maricopa County jail.

He is expected to enter a plea on April 27 at Maricopa County Superior Court.
