A 43-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the 2002 shooting death of a Mesa woman.

Kelly Hammond was shot several times with a handgun during an altercation at a house party near Southern Avenue and Mesa Drive on Nov. 22, 2002, Mesa police said.

The case remained unsolved for years, but nearly three years ago, Mesa cold-case detectives began taking a closer look, police said.

The detectives were able to locate and interview witnesses, which eventually led to the arrest of David Michael Vazquez on Sept. 28 in connection with Hammond’s death, police said.

Mesa police say they suspect that Vazquez pulled out a handgun during the altercation and shot Hammond.

Vazquez was arrested in Houston and remains in custody awaiting extradition to Arizona, Mesa police said.

Additional details were not immediately available.
