Arizona residents will finally have a taste of fall starting this week.

The temperatures are expected to drop to the upper 90s on Thursday and Friday, said the National Weather Service.

The Phoenix Metro area, along with other desert areas of southern and central Arizona will start to experience lower temperatures, which are expected to stay under 100 degrees through most of next week, the Weather Service said.

Low temperatures are expected to reach the mid-70s with some areas reaching the 60s starting overnight Thursday and early Friday.

Wednesday was one of the last days expected to exceed 100 degrees.

“The high (Wednesday) was expected to be 108 degrees. We have not reached it, but we still have a little bit of time,” said NWS meteorologist Jessica Nolte.

The high on Wednesday reached 105 degrees.

Between the middle and end of September, it’s normal to hit 100 degrees, but the region could also continue to see a drop in temperature, said Nolte.

Temperatures will stay in the range of 95 to 98 degrees inPhoenix into the middle of next week, with lows ranging from 72 to 82 degrees, Nolte said.

In addition to the cool-down, the monsoon season is coming to an end, she added, although storm activity was firing up in southwest Maricopa County Wednesday evening, where rain was falling in some areas, as well as areas in Yavapai County.

Monsoon season ends on Sept.30, but it’s normal to see monsoon conditions clearing before then, Nolte said. There will be some areas that could experience lingering storm conditions in the north central Valley, Nolte said.
