New York Times bestselling author and journalist Shanna Hogan is in critical condition after a near-drowning incident on Thursday.

“Our beloved wife, mother, true-crime author, former Valley reporter and friend Shanna Hogan is fighting for her life in an area hospital after a tragic fall and near drowning on Thursday,” Hogan’s family said in a statement sent Monday from Christia Gibbons.

“Her husband Matt LaRussa has been at her bedside. The family so appreciates the outpouring of love and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.

The Phoenix Fire Department reported on Thursday that a 37-year-old Phoenix woman was in critical condition after her husband found her in the pool incapacitated in a residential neighborhood near Sonoran Desert Drive and North Valley Parkway.

Hogan, an award-winning true-crime author, received nationwide acclaim for her book, “Picture Perfect: The Jodi Arias Story.” The novel recounted the shocking murder case of Travis Alexander, whom Arias was convicted of killing in his Mesa home.

A graduate of ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Hogan then returned to teach introduction to news reporting. She also appeared on numerous national TV and true-crime shows, Gibbons said.
