The Coyotes are getting close to filling out new head coach Rick Tocchet’s staff with assistants, and John MacLean and Scott Allen are “very strong candidates,” a source said Tuesday.

While nothing is finalized at this point, the source said, hires could be made this week.

When he was introduced as the Coyotes’ next coach, Tocchet said he wanted to recreate the culture he had in Pittsburgh as an assistant alongside coach Mike Sullivan. Each coach had autonomy, and Tocchet wants assistants to challenge him.

Tocchet has been leading the search and said last week he’d been talking to a lot of people and was really interested in a few.

“You just gotta trust the people that you’re close to that know people and then go on your gut instinct,” he said at the time.

General Manager John Chayka said Saturday the team was looking to bring in two assistants and hoped to have the additions done this week. Assistant coach John Slaney is likely to be shifted to the team’s American Hockey League staff in Tucson with the Roadrunners.

“I think it’s just paramount to get the right people in the right spots and to surround Rick with the right types of people to help him out,” Chayka said.

MacLean is a former player who spent the bulk of his career with the Devils. The former forward played 1,194 regular-season games, tallying 413 goals and 842 points with the Devils, Sharks, Rangers and Stars.

He went on to be an assistant with the Devils from 2002 to 2009 before coaching the team’s AHL team for a season. MacLean returned to the Devils as head coach in 2010-11 but was fired after the team started 9-22-2.

The 52-year-old went on to be an assistant with the Hurricanes from 2011-14. More recently, MacLean has been an analyst for the Devils on MSG Networks.

Like Tocchet, MacLean won a Stanley Cup as a player (1995) and as an assistant (2003) – both with the Devils.

As for Allen, he played professionally as a forward, including in the ECHL and Central Hockey League. He’s been a head coach and assistant in the ECHL and AHL and was an assistant with the Islanders from 2009-12.

Allen, 51, spent 2016-17 as an assistant with the Panthers but was dismissed after the season amid a coaching change.
