A man turned himself in to police Sunday evening and acknowledged his involvement in a fatal shooting at a Mesa apartment complex, officials said.

Around 6:30 p.m., 24-year-old Jesse Hernandez of Phoenix turned himself in to police, Mesa police said.

Mesa officers responded about 4:30 p.m. on Sunday to the Coral Point apartments at 2343 W. Main St., where a man identified as Khalil Evans was discovered with gunshot wounds, according to police.

Evans was taken to a Banner Desert Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Mesa police said.

After Hernandez turned himself in to Phoenix police, officers from that department took him back to Mesa police.

Hernandez told Mesa detectives that he was visiting his ex-wife at the apartments. He was there to fix a fuse in her car, according to court records. Evans approached him outside and asked about a missing key, Mesa police said. Hernandez said he fired the gun into the air prior to leaving the scene, police said.

According to court records, Hernandez then got into a vehicle driven by a friend and left the area.

Police, in the records, said Hernandez told them he stole the gun from his cousin’s home earlier in the day with four rounds in the chamber because he felt threatened by his ex-wife’s father.

Police executed a search warrant at Hernandez’s home in Phoenix and recovered a 9mm glock handgun, believed to be involved in the shooting.

Hernandez was arrested and booked on one count of second-degree murder and one count of misconduct involving a firearm, police said.

His bond was set at $500,000.

His next court appearance was scheduled for Oct. 4.
