Mayor Jenn Daniels, who didn’t run for reelection, announced Tuesday she was resigning effective immediately.
She made the announcement at the end of Tuesday evening’s Town Council meeting.
In a statement posted on the town’s website immediately after the meeting, Daniels expressed gratitude for her time in town government.
“I have loved serving the Town of Gilbert for more than 11 years. I have worked alongside amazing people — staff and council members, regional and school leaders, business owners, volunteers, faith groups and friends and neighbors — all working to make our community a better place to live, work and play,” she said in the statement.
“Thank you to those who put their trust me in me to lead. You have been patient and generous, and I will always be grateful for this remarkable experience.”
What Daniels didn’t say in the statement was why she was resigning immediately.
Who will be mayor?
Daniels announced in February that she would not seek reelection to a second term as mayor.
Last week’s mayoral election did not lead to an outright winner among four candidates in the primary, setting up a Nov. 3 runoff between the top two vote-getters, Matt Nielsen and Brigette Peterson.
The winner of the runoff will be sworn in as mayor in January.
Until then, the Town Council will appoint someone to fill the role.
Qualified electors who have lived in the town for at least one year are eligible. The Town Council will determine the process to select Daniels’ replacement.
