A 24-year-old Phoenix man was arrested Sunday morning after he crashed a vehicle on Interstate 17, killing his sole passenger and shutting down the highway near Indian School Road for hours, officials said.
Jaime Muro was traveling north about 5:30 a.m. before crashing into the wall on the right shoulder, said Raul Garcia, a state Department of Public Safety spokesman.
Passenger Verennice Mastache, 24, died after being thrown from the vehicle, Garcia said.
Muro tried to run away, but troopers found him in a nearby neighborhood, Garcia said. Officials believe impairment was a factor.
Muro was expected to be booked on suspicion of manslaughter, Garcia said.
