The Diamondbacks’ regulars were back in the lineup against the Giants, but the buzz remained absent from Chase Field on Tuesday night. Call it the calm before the wild-card-game storm, but it had the feel of a game that did not matter – which, of course, it didn’t.

J.D. Martinez does not like that way of thinking. He does not like the inevitable path it takes a player down, that of a long waiting game until the playoffs begin and the flipping of the proverbial switch. He does not believe in the switch.

“Now is not the time to say, ‘Oh, OK, we just have to finish these last four games out,’ ” Martinez said. “No, no, no, no, no. I’m not a believer in that switch. I think we’ve got to go. We’ve got to get going. So when the bell rings we’re clicking on all cylinders.”

The Diamondbacks looked pretty sharp in an 11-4 win over the San Francisco Giants, none more so than Martinez, who turned in another monster performance. He doubled home two runs in the first. He launched a grand slam in the second. He laced a screaming, line-drive single (exit velocity: 110 mph) in the fourth. The six RBIs pushed his season total to 103, establishing a new career high.

His performance since joining the Diamondbacks in July continues to border on the unbelievable. He is hitting .303 with 28 homers and 64 RBIs with his new team. Tuesday night marked just his 58th game with the Diamondbacks.

“What can you say about him?” manager Torey Lovullo said. “It just keeps going on and on and on.”

Robbie Ray threw five innings in what was perhaps both a bounce-back outing and a final tuneup. Lovullo was evasive as to whether Ray would pitch again; his fifth day would land on Sunday, and if he doesn’t pitch then – and if the Diamondbacks advance to the division series and he’s slated to start Game 1, as expected – then he could go 10 days without pitching.

“I’ll just go through my normal routine and I’ll stay prepared,” Ray said. “Whenever they call my name, I’ll be ready whenever that is. From here on out, it’s crunch time.”

Ray, who was roughed by the Padres in San Diego last week, was limited to just 80 pitches as the Diamondbacks are paring back on their starters’ workloads to make sure they’re strong for the postseason.

Archie Bradley, however, saw his workload increase. He threw 38 pitches in 1 2/3 innings, an indication of how the Diamondbacks might use him in the playoffs.

“We’re trying to prepare in every way that we possibly can and every scenario that may come up in a one-game, all-in moment,” Lovullo said.

Martinez believes part of that preparation is in not coasting to the finish line.

“I feel like now is when you start getting hot,” Martinez said. “Now is the time to get it going. We had that run at the beginning of the month where we won 13 straight. (But) I feel like now is the time when you want to get on that run. That’s a message that all of us need to take in. Now is the time to go.”
