Behind the scenes at Diamondbacks Photo Day

Here’s something you probably didn’t expect to read when the Diamondbacks gathered for spring training back in February:

Arizona is off to the fastest start in Chase Field history.

Yet that’s exactly what the Diamondbacks have done after their 11-5 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday before an enthusiastic crowd of 36,294. They’re 8-1 after nine home games, bettering the 7-2 marks set in 1999, 2000 and 2008.

Who knows how long the success at home will continue but after a 2016 season in which Arizona was 33-48 at Chase, it’s good to give the paying customers three hours of enjoyment rather than three hours of drudgery.

“As simple as it is, it’s fun playing baseball,” said third baseman Jake Lamb, who had a two-run homer in Arizona’s three-run first inning.

The Diamondbacks aren’t just winning games at Chase. They’re doing it with style. Their 24 runs in back-to-back games against the Dodgers were the most against Los Angeles on consecutive nights since 2000. On Saturday, they pounded 15 hits off three Los Angeles pitchers and hit four home runs, two by left fielder Yasmany Tomas. And when the Dodgers crept within 6-5 after a three-run top of the sixth, the Diamondbacks responded by scoring a combined five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away.

It was enough to make a winner out of starter Robbie Ray, who gave up five earned runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

“I thought that was a pretty special night for us offensively,” said manager Torey Lovullo.

And we haven’t even mentioned right fielder David Peralta, who set a franchise record with four doubles, the last of which came in the eighth inning with the game all but decided. Peralta could have strolled into first base but he ran hard – without knowing the record was his to have.

“That’s just the way I play,” Peralta said. “I like to play hard for my team, play hard for myself. I saw the ground ball and I was like, ‘I have to get to second base so I’m in scoring position for (Paul Goldschmidt).’ As soon as I got the double there was screaming and I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ ”

What’s going on is the Diamondbacks are making fans forget just how miserable it was to be at the ballpark last summer.

“It was tough,” Lamb said. “You want to play well in front of your home fans. When you keep losing at home people don’t want to come to games. I mean, I wouldn’t want to come to a game where you’re always losing at home. We’re playing good baseball right now and hopefully it will continue.”

MAC FROM CHASE FIELD: Is organist behind all these D-Backs come-from-behind wins?

Lovullo wasn’t here in 2016 but he sees the Diamondbacks growing before his eyes.

“I know these guys are really encouraged by what they’re doing as a group,” he said. “They’re feeding off one another.”

Asked if he’s pushing any buttons that might not have gotten pushed last year, Lovullo said, “These guys deserve all the credit. They’re coming out hungry, eager to prove themselves.”

Peralta was one of the last players to emerge from the showers after the game. He got dressed and when he turned around to answer questions, there was a wide smile on his face.

“We’re just having a good time,” he said. “Last year is last year. This is a new year. We’re a new team.”
