A man arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Department of Public Safety trooper has been charged with first-degree murder, the DPS said Sunday.

Officials said Issac Damon King, 20, made a remote initial appearance before a judge from his hospital room Sunday.

He was charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, four counts of aggravated assault, three counts of endangerment and one count of resisting arrest, according to the department.

King is accused of shooting and killing Tyler Edenhofer, a 24-year-old trooper hired in September after serving in the U.S. Navy.

Edenhofer was in his final days of DPS training when he and other troopers responded to reports of a man throwing rocks at cars along the Interstate 10 west of Phoenix on Wednesday night.

Trooper Dalin Dorris was also shot during an eight-minute scuffle with King, officials said, but survived his injuries. Troopers used a stun gun on King during the fight, according to Milstead.

King was initially placed in a medically induced coma after refusing treatment at a Valley hospital following the shooting.

Funeral services

A candlelight vigil for Edenhofer will be held 7:30 p.m. Monday at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, with remarks from from Gov. Doug Ducey and Milstead expected at 8 p.m.

Edenhofer’s visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday at Best Funeral Services and Chapel at 9380 W. Peoria Ave.

His funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Christ’s Church of the Valley at 7007 W. Happy Valley Road in Peoria.

All events are open to the public.
