A wrong-way crash early Tuesday morning closed southbound Interstate 17 north of Phoenix, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

The crash happened just north of Black Canyon City at the Sunset Point rest area at Mile Post 252, ADOT said.

A Pontiac sedan crashed into a Toyota Rav4 whilst driving north in the southbound lanes, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

When officers arrived at the accident, both cars were on fire, DPS said.

All four people – including the lone driver in the Pontiac – in the two cars were taken to hospitals. Two were flown and two were driven to Phoenix hospitals.

ADOT said I-17 northbound was not affected. Southbound lane of the highway reopened at roughly 6:30 a.m.
