Do you know what to do if you’re in an accident?
Southbound lanes of Interstate 17 were closed just north of Black Canyon City, following a multi-vehicle crash Sunday evening, snarling the route back to Phoenix.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said it expected significant delays with no timetable for the road’s reopening.
The Department of Transportation reported a back up that initially stretched at least five miles. Phoenix-bound drivers were being detoured to State Route 69 through Prescott, a detour that adds about 75 miles to the trip.
As the most direct link between the northern and southern portions of Arizona, accidents on Interstate 17 frequently lock traffic in place.
The department of transportation has considered expanding I-17 in the bottlenecking strip between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point, but a spokesman told the Republic in 2016 that it did not have the funds.
