A single-vehicle fatal accident shut down eastbound Interstate 10 south of the Phoenix area on Wednesday afternoon, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m., near the Sacaton Rest Area, which is on the Gila River Reservation south of Chandler and north of Casa Grande, officials said. The freeway was closed for almost two hours while the accident was investigated, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The eastbound lanes on I-10 reopened shortly before 5:30 p.m.
Eastbound traffic was forced to exit at Casa Blanca Road and take State Route 587 during the closure, ADOT said. Motorists heading to Tucson were advised to take U.S. 60 eastbound to State Route 79, ADOT said.
Additional details on the accident were not available.
