Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin, who was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic last week with a serious but undisclosed medical condition, is apparently on the road to recovery.

Indians general manager Chris Antonetti on Monday provided an update on Martin, who had fellow players offering their prayers and displays of support for his recovery.

Antonetti said Martin developed a bacterial infection that resulted in toxins entering his blood stream and attacking his internal organs.

However, he said Martin has made substantial progress over the past 24 to 36 hours.

“He’s regained a lot of the organ function,” Antonetti told reporters. “We’re optimistic. He’s on a good path right now and we’re hopeful that he’ll have a full recovery. But he’s got a long path to get back to full health in front of him.”

Martin was acquired by the Indians from the Detroit Tigers at the July 31 trade deadline.
