Forwards Jamie McGinn and Brad Richardson were among the players the Coyotes exposed to the Vegas Golden Knights for the expansion draft.

The NHL revealed each team’s list of protected and available players Sunday as the process to prepare the league’s newest team for its debut next season continues with Vegas selecting one player from the 30 other teams.

Protected lists were due Saturday, and the Golden Knights’ picks will be announced Wednesday. Arizona chose to protect eight skaters and one goaltender rather than seven forwards, three defenseman and one goalie.

The team shielded newly acquired center Nick Cousins, restricted free agent forwards Anthony Duclair and Jordan Martinook, winger Tobias Rieder, defensemen Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Alex Goligoski, Connor Murphy and Luke Schenn and goaltender Chad Johnson after adding the netminder Saturday in a significant trade that shipped former No. 1 Mike Smith to the Flames.

These decisions left regulars like McGinn and Richardson exposed, but that wasn’t a surprise. Each team had to expose at least two forwards and one defenseman who were under contract for next season and had logged 40 or more games last season or 70 or more the past two seasons.

McGinn, Richardson and Rieder were the only three forwards who met that requirement and with the Coyotes not likely wanting to risk losing Rieder’s skill set, McGinn and Richardson seemed destined to be exposed.

And with the team including Schenn on its protection list, defenseman Kevin Connauton was the lone blue liner to meet the requirement. Same with goalie Louis Domingue, as the Coyotes had to expose a goaltender who was under contract for next season or was a RFA who had received his qualifying offer. Domingue has a deal for 2017-18, while Johnson does not as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent.

The rest of Arizona’s list of available players includes RFAs the team added last season to help it finish out the season — forwards Alexander Burmistrov, Peter Holland, Josh Jooris and Teemu Pulkkinen. General Manager John Chayka said he’s talked to each player’s agent and it’s possible the team touches base at a later date to explore signing someone.

Captain Shane Doan and winger Radim Vrbata were also left exposed but with both UFAs, that’s not an unusual call. Chayka said it didn’t make sense to him to protect players that are eligible to sign anywhere July 1.

Leaving these players available, however, doesn’t mean they couldn’t remain with the Coyotes. Vegas is now able to interview UFAs and RFAs exposed in the draft until the team’s selections are due Wednesday at 7 a.m. If the Golden Knights successfully strike a deal, that player will count as Vegas’ choice.

But if these players go unsigned, their statuses remain unchanged with their original teams. Qualifying offers for RFAs are due next Sunday; if a player isn’t extended one, he becomes a UFA. And although an interview period will open up before free agency opens July 1, UFAs are only allowed to sign with their current squad until the market officially opens.

Other UFAs the Coyotes made available are defenseman Zbynek Michalek and players from the minors (defensemen Jamie McBain and Jarred Tinordi along with forwards Garret Ross, Joe Whitney and Chris Mueller). The rest of Arizona’s available list are RFAs from the minors — forwards Tyler Gaudet, Jeremy Morin, Mitchell Moroz and Branden Troock.

A league-wide trade/signing freeze did go into effect Saturday and lasts until Thursday morning, but this doesn’t prohibit teams from making deals with Vegas. Actually, it’s expected that teams will work out trades with Vegas during this time to encourage it to not draft a certain player from their teams or to take a particular player from another team and then trade.

Some of the intriguing players exposed Sunday include Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek, Predators winger James Neal, Wild center Eric Staal, Panthers center Jonathan Marchessault and Islanders center Brock Nelson.
