A fatal accident closed westbound Interstate 10 at 51st Avenue early Saturday, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

The crash happened at about 2 a.m. Saturday, according to DPS. One person died in the three-car collision. 

Major westbound delays were expected and alternate routes were urged. 

The Arizona Department of Transportation was recommending that drivers exit at or before 43rd Avenue westbound to avoid the backup. Westbound I-10 was open at 67th Avenue.

There was no estimated time to reopen the freeway, DPS said.
