A home invasion in northwest Phoenix turned deadly Friday after a homeowner exchanged gunfire with two people who broke into his home, fatally striking one of them, police said.

Officers responded to the call in the 5600 block of North 34th Avenue and determined there had been a home invasion followed by gunfire between the homeowner and the two people who invaded his house, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Alan Pfohl said.

The homeowner gave police a vehicle and suspect description, Pfohl said.

Officers located the vehicle near the 2500 block of West San Miguel Avenue and discovered an unresponsive person inside, Pfohl said.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pfohl said the other attacker was gone when officers located the vehicle.

An investigation is ongoing.
