Seahawks receiver Doug Baldwin wasn’t sure what kind of role he would play in Thursday’s game vs. the Cardinals.

During pregame warmups at University of Phoenix Stadium, he began experiencing some discomfort in his left hip and quad.

According to Baldwin, the pain grew progressively throughout the game and culminated in a play that caused as much pain to Baldwin as it did to Cardinals fans.

On a second-and-21 just a few minutes into the fourth quarter, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson evaded defenders and launched a pass downfield off his back foot.

Somehow, Baldwin ended up with it — and he raced down the sideline until he was knocked out of bounds at the 2-yard line.

Baldwin said the extra exertion on that play aggravated the discomfort he had been feeling, but after the game the receiver said he felt fine.

The play set up a 2-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to tight end Jimmy Graham that gave Seattle a 22-10 lead over the Cardinals that essentially sealed the game.

“Fantastic execution, the chemistry between those guys,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “It really was an igniter. We needed to get separation in the scoring.”

Carroll said he hadn’t had a chance to see a replay but was eager to see how the momentous play developed.

“I need to see it again because I can’t imagine all the spins (Wilson) was doing just to make that play.”

And if you ask Baldwin how many NFL quarterbacks there are who can make that throw, the answer is brief.

“One,” he said. “Just one.”

The play seemed to take the life out of the stadium and the Cardinals defense, which had performed admirably on Thursday.

“There’s not much you can do about that,” Cardinals linebacker Deone Bucannon said. “We were playing sound defense across the board. We were rushing them and we kept them contained. He was just able to make that throw.”

It was important not only for its worthiness of making the highlight reel, but for its role in deciding Thursday’s game.

“It forced the Cardinals offense into hurry-up mode, which lends itself to our defense,” Baldwin said. “For us to get that far into the red zone and then cap it off with a score, obviously it sealed the game for us.”
