Officials football practices for the 2017 high school season are still a couple of weeks away.

But this is the time when high school teams get away for camps. Some hit the California beaches, other take for the Arizona high county.

This is a look through photographs of teams at camps, giving the high school football fans an inside look to how they’re preparing for the season.

Gilbert Higley Knights

The Knights, one of the 4A favorites this season, is in Heber this week, hitting mountainous trails.

“This is our sixth year coming to Heber and our goal each year at camp is to become more mentally and physically tough,” coach Eddy Zubey said. “Create a program bond that includes all three levels. Develop a belief in each other that we can go the distance.”

Florence Gophers

Coach Scott Howard called his team’s camp last week in Snowflake the best he has had in 18 years of coaching.

It is a senior-laden team, led by quarterback Jared Wood, who has had some college interest.

The Gophers could be serious contenders in the 3A Conference.

“They’re really taking charge,” Howard said of his seniors. “We got a lot of work in. We completed against Snowflake in 7-on-7s. This could be our best team. A lot of these kids played as sophomores. They’re pretty talented.”

Howard said there were no camp incidents with his seniors taking charge.

“They police themselves,” Howard said. “Any time there is a beef with other kids, they would step in before it got to me, then tell me about it.”
