Larry Fitzgerald has been a football historian as long as he’s been a football player. He would devour media guides his father, Minneapolis journalist Larry Fitzgerald Sr., brought home from games, reading them from cover to cover.

“I know all the players that have come before me and I have a great respect for them,” Fitzgerald said.

It’s no surprise, then, that Fitzgerald said it was “special” to stay in Canton, Ohio, after the Cardinals-Cowboys Hall of Fame game last Thursday and watch former teammate Kurt Warner get his gold jacket during the induction ceremony on Saturday.

“It was great to be there and to be able to support a great friend and mentor,” Fitzgerald said. “And being able to rub shoulders with the likes of Dan Marino, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Tim Brown … I mean just to see so much history and so many wonderful players that laid the foundation for what I’m able to do.

“I’m a historian of the game. I know all of the players that have come before me and I have a great respect for them. I don’t know if the younger generation knows or cares that much. It’s a completely different generation. You take a young guy into (the Hall of Fame) and he probably wouldn’t know 70 percent of the guys in there. But I knew everybody by sight.”

Fitzgerald said he became emotional a few times during Saturday’s speeches and added he had no problem with some of the inductees – including Warner and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones – talking for longer than 30 minutes.

“I think you should have the time to speak as long as you like,” he said. “To be able to encapsulate your entire life … I started playing football when I was 6 years old and I’ll be 34 in a couple of weeks. To think about how many people have touched your life in that many years and coaches and guidance counselors to relatives, there’s so many people to recognize and to talk about them in 20 minutes would be difficult for anybody.”

Not-so-hot-in-Cleveland

Cornerback Tramon Williams, signed as a free agent a week ago, laughed when it was suggested to him Sunday that he must have a new lease on life going from the Cleveland Browns, where he played the last two seasons, to the Cardinals.

“You said that, I didn’t,” he replied, his smile wide.

But, Williams admitted, it’s rejuvenating to play for a team that has Super Bowl aspirations as opposed to team – and a franchise – that is perpetually rebuilding.

“That was one of the hardest things I had to do,” Williams said of his two years with the Browns. “I’ve won a Super Bowl (with Green Bay) and we won one game last year and we played our hearts out to win that game. I felt like that was my second-best winning game in my career. That tells you how it was.”

Williams, who is expected to challenge Justin Bethel to be the starting cornerback opposite Patrick Peterson, said he’s still learning some of the Cardinals’ terminology but that the defense is similar to what Cleveland ran his first year there so he expects to be caught up by the regular-season opener.

Injury update

Coach Bruce Arians said linebackers Phillip Wheeler (undisclosed injury) and Jarvis Jones (back) and wide receiver Aaron Dobson (hamstring) are the only three players expected to miss Saturday’s preseason game against Oakland. Wideout John Brown, who’s been battling a quad injury, should practice on Tuesday, Arians said. “Hopefully it’s gone and he can finish out the rest of the preseason,” Arians added.

Camp Confidential

Camping out: Arizona’s defense dominated Sunday afternoon’s workout. Early on, defensive end Josh Mauro twice “tackled” David Johnson behind the line of scrimmage. The defense intercepted Carson Palmer three times and second-year pro Brandon Williams dropped what should have been a pick-six on a ball thrown by Drew Stanton. Cornerbacks Patrick Peterson and Justin Bethel were outstanding, breaking up passes throughout the workout … Arians said that after Carson Palmer takes about 15 snaps in Saturday’s preseason game against the Raiders, Drew Stanton will play the second quarter and Blaine Gabbert will play the entire second half … The Cardinals carried nine defensive linemen last year but Arians isn’t committed to that same number this year, saying those final roster spots will depend largely on who can contribute to special teams … Tackle D.J. Humphries sat out practice after straining a hamstring on Saturday. He’s expected back Tuesday.

Injury report: Wide receiver John Brown (quadriceps), linebacker Jarvis Jones (back) and tackle D.J. Humphries (hamstring) did not practice. Brown and Humphries are expected to play against Oakland on Saturday.

Quote: “I’ve felt great about this defense since the spring. With the additions of Karlos (Dansby) and Antoine (Bethea) and then the draft picks we should be much, much better defensively.” – coach Bruce Arians.

Up next: The Cardinals are off on Monday. They will practice Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at University of Phoenix Stadium. The practice will be open to the public.
