GCU is eligible this season to make the NCAA Tournament,

Grand Canyon University landed the highest-rated recruit since Dan Majerle took over the reins five years ago.

Tim Finke, a 6-foot-6 senior shooting guard at Champaign (Ill.) Central High, announced his commitment to GCU via Instagram on Tuesday night, saying, “I always wanted to be a part of something special. I found it here.”

Finke is expected to sign his letter of intent and send it to GCU on Wednesday.

The Lopes are in their first season of eligibility for the NCAA basketball tournament this year.

The News-Gazette reported that Finke had 16 college basketball offers, including Illinois, Notre Dame, Butler, Oregon, Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Northwestern.

ESPN made Finke a four-star recruit. He is rated the fifth-best overall prospect in the 2018 class in Illinois.

He is coached by his father Jeff Finke at Central, where he made All-Area the past two seasons. He averaged 19.5 points and eight rebounds on last year’s Class 3A state championship team.
