Grand Canyon University, which participated in a lower college postseason men’s basketball tournament during its first three years in the NCAA Division I transition period, will not play in one this year.

Charles Hampton, media sports relations director at GCU, tweeted, “Due to end of season injuries, with an eye on the 2017-18 season, @ GCUHoops will not be participating in a 2017 postseason tournament.”

The Antelopes (22-9) finished up the final probation period season on a seven-game winning streak, finishing the 2016-17 with a 58-52 victory at Western Athletic Conference regular-season champion CSU-Bakersfield. They finished tied for second in the WAC with New Mexico State. They were ineligible to play in the WAC Tournament, because of the probation moving from Division II to I.

Next year, they come off probation and will be eligible for the WAC and NCAA tournaments.

GCU played in the CollegeInsder.com Postseason Tournament the last three years. It reached the quarterfinals last year, losing at Coastal Carolina.

Guards DeWayne Russell (broken hand) and Josh Braun (knee surgery) and forward Darion Clark (shoulder) all suffered injuries this season.

Russell played through the broken hand and ended up making  first-team All-WAC, along with Braun, who missed December.

“Injuries this season caused our players to play a lot of minutes, some needing surgery,” GCU AD Mike Vaught said in a text message. “Dan decided to get everyone needed repairs, rehabbed and ready by August.”

GCU has 6-foot-10 center Alessandro Lever in for an official recruiting trip this weekend. Lever, from Italy, is a 2017 prospect.
