A nationwide ranking of the states’ governors places Arizona’s Doug Ducey 36th when it comes to popularity.
That’s based on approval ratings gathered by Morning Consult, a polling and market research firm. With a 48 percent approval rating, Ducey ranks far ahead of cellar dwellers like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Kansas’ Sam Brownback, who both came in with 25 percent approval.
But the first-term governor also posted the biggest approval drop, according to Morning Consult, down 14 percent from April, the last time the firm checked in with Arizona voters.
The poll suggested Ducey’s drop might be because “he has also expressed concerns about the Obamacare repeal effort in Washington.” Ducey’s major concern is the proposed cuts to Medicaid, as Arizona opted to expand Medicaid four years ago. The repeal legislation would leave the state with the prospect of kicking thousands of people off the health-care rolls and dealing with a multibillion-dollar hole in the budget.
As for governors most liked by their voters?
The top nine are all Republicans, led by Charlie Baker of Massachusetts with a 71 percent approval rating. The No. 10 spot is shared by Republicans Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, Bill Haslam of Tennessee and Democrat Andrew Cuomo of New York.
