Classes were expected to resume as normal Tuesday at Mesquite Elementary School in Gilbert after an overnight fire there.

Gilbert firefighters found a “floor to ceiling” fire inside a classroom at the school near Lindsay Road and Mesquite Street early Tuesday. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Mesquite Elementary Principal Dawn Koberstein said in a statement to parents that firefighters were able to contain the fire to one side of a small modular building near the entrance of the school.

None of the main buildings at Mesquite Elementary were damaged by the fire.

Koberstein said in the statement that the safety of the students and staff was never at risk and that classes were expected to resume as normal Tuesday morning.
