Parker, Pence have run-scoring hits for Giants

Jarrett Parker hit a two-run home run in the second inning and Hunter Pence laced a two-run single in the third, and the Giants had a 4-1 lead over the Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon.

Parker, who missed most of the season’s first four months with a broken clavicle, has had an eventful couple of days against the Diamondbacks. He doubled off the right field wall in the seventh inning and delivered the game-winning hit in the 10th on Saturday night.

His home run off Patrick Corbin in the second came on a 3-2 fastball that was driven to straightaway center field. The pitch was down in the strike zone but over the middle of the plate.

The third inning began when Jeff Samardzija mashed a double off the center field wall, a drive that looked like it was going to be the second home run Corbin had allowed to an opposing pitcher in as many starts. He gave up a homer to Jon Lester last week in Chicago.

The Giants were also aided by an error from shortstop Ketel Marte, who allowed a ground ball by Gorkys Hernandez to roll through his legs, setting up Pence’s two-run single.

Pence took an off-balance swing at a pitch out of the strike zone, lining it into left field to give the Giants a 4-1 lead.

Barrett fills variety of roles in D-Backs’ pen

Jake Barrett served up a home run in his first outing back in the big leagues on July 7. But the Diamondbacks reliever hasn’t allowed anything since, entering Sunday with 11 consecutive scoreless appearances.

He’s seemed to quickly earn the trust of manager Torey Lovullo, who has used Barrett in a variety of roles, including asking him to protect a lead in the seventh inning on Saturday night against the Giants.

“He fills a lot of different spots for me,” Lovullo said. “When I’m kind of projecting some matchups, he fits in a lot of different areas. That versatility has been a luxury for me. The thing is, he comes in and he presses the zone with his fastball. He’s gotten big outs.”

Barrett was bothered by shoulder issues throughout spring training and didn’t appear in minor league games until late April. He said it took several weeks before he felt like his old self.

Barrett didn’t crack the big league bullpen until a couple of weeks after Rubby De La Rosa. But when the Diamondbacks needed a roster spot to add David Hernandez last week, it was De La Rosa – not Barrett – who was optioned.

Barrett finished last season as the team’s best reliever and even saw time in the closer’s role. His duties have changed this year but he says he’s fine with it.

“I feel like I don’t have a role right now and I’ve just been throwing in any situation possible right now, just really whenever I’m called upon I’m ready to go out there,” he said. “I’m just trying to attack hitters and make sure I’m going out there feeling good.”

Injury updates

Left-hander Robbie Ray played catch again Saturday, Lovullo said, and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday, his first since suffering a concussion on July 28.

Ray is still not a candidate to start on Thursday against the Dodgers. The club would like Ray to throw multiple bullpen sessions before he returns to the rotation.

“We want to get him through the first bullpen and then come up with a game plan,” Lovullo said.

Right-hander Randall Delgado’s throwing program got out to 90 feet. He’ll take Sunday off from throwing and pick up again on Monday.

Positioning debate

Jarrett Parker’s game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th inning came on a ground ball that, in most instances, the second baseman would be able to field without incident.

But the Diamondbacks had Adam Rosales shifted into short right field and swung over toward first base, and by the time Rosales got to the ball, he had no chance to throw out Parker.

“It was a great debate that we had last night,” Lovullo said. “We take a lot of pride in positioning guys the best we possibly can. In that situation, left-on-left, in that particular matchup, we were exactly where we were supposed to be and he just beat us. I know it’s easy and my natural instinct was to review this and see where we should have been, but we were exactly where we were supposed to be.”

Corbin vs. Samardzija

Diamondbacks pitcher Patrick Corbin was roughed up by the Cubs on Tuesday at Wrigley Field, giving up eight runs (seven earned) in three innings. The Cubs connected for three home runs off him. He had a prolonged stretch of success prior to that, posting a 2.83 ERA in eight starts.

Corbin faced the Giants just once this season, giving up three runs (two earned) in four innings in his first outing of the season.

Giants right-hander Jeff Samardzija has thrown well in his past two starts, allowing four earned runs in 15 innings, holding opponents to a .524 OPS against.

He faced the Diamondbacks in each of his first two starts of the season, getting hit hard (six runs in 5 1/3 innings) in the first one and posting better results (three runs in 6 2/3 innings) the next time.

Jake Lamb has great numbers against Samardzija, going 5 for 11 (.455) with two doubles, one triple, one homer and four walks.
