Those planning to stay in town for the Labor Day holiday weekend who are looking for something to do might want to consider first Friday activities in downtown Phoenix.
The monthly art walk is still on pause due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, but some galleries, museums and other venues are open with special events for the evening. In addition, artists and vendors have resumed lining the sidewalks of Roosevelt Row, Grand Avenue and other areas downtown
If your plans include venturing inside a museum or gallery, be sure to have a mask handy as some venues are requiring face coverings for entry, even for those who have had COVID-19 vaccinations.
It’s best to check ahead with the venue you plan to visit to find out which policies and safety protocols are in place.
Following are a few of the first Friday activities taking place on Sept. 3.
Interactive art at Found:RE Phoenix Hotel
There will be festivities for the Labor Day holiday all weekend at Found:RE, but for First Friday visitors can witness an interactive art experience with Mohan Toopal. There will also be live music from McKenzie Hayes.
First Friday event takes place from 8-10 p.m.

First Friday at Tap That Downtown
Festivities include artists showing off their wares, more vendors, live music, food, wine and craft beers. At 9 p.m. DJ Smooth takes over spinning Afrobeats, Latin, hip hop and trap music.

Call Me Ishmael at Five15Arts
This solo exhibition by Michael Pierre Price features 13 abstract and surreal works that weave a thought-provoking story. According to the gallery’s description, “Call Me Ishmael” merges physics with neuroscience and spirituality to present the artist’s perspective on the nature of reality, consciousness and existence through digitally created art. Augmented reality animations enhance the artwork and a 33-minute soundscape adds to the experience.
The event runs from 6-9 p.m. Masks/face coverings are required for all visitors to the gallery.

ADMIXT ARTS: Writing * And * at ASU’s Step Gallery
Stop by an opening reception for this mixed-media art exhibition at Step Gallery at ASU’s Grant Street Studios. The exhibition features collaborations by: fiction writer Christina D’Antoni and ceramicist Jan Davids, poet M McDonough and printmaker Daniella Napolitano, photographer Bria Thompson and poet Monica Garcia, lithographer Maggie Pierce and poet Carina Muñoz, narrative punctuated by collage by Winslow Schmelling and Julia Martin and photo collage with poetry by Erin Peters and Benjamin Moore. There will also be concrete poetry by Nicole Arocho Hernandez, soundscapes by Hayden Casey and poetry/photo collage by Avery Meinen.
Reception is 6-9 p.m.

Art Park at Alwun House
Monthly First Friday festivities at Alwun House include beer, wine, food trucks, music and a variety of artists and artisans selling their creations. At this month’s event, Embry Health will also be providing COVID-19 testing.

Summer Blend at First Studio Gallery
Head to First Studio Gallery from 6-9 p.m., for an artists reception for the creatives behind “Summer Blend.” This exhibition features the works of four artists: John David Yanke, Barbara Bagan, Kyllan Maney and Cindy Schnackle. ‘Summer Blend’ highlights abstract art through bright, playful, soft and serene tones. Sculptures, paintings and cold wax are among the art styles you’ll see.
Closing reception for “Summer Blend” is scheduled for Sept. 17. Visitors can also take a self-guided tour of the gallery Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Masks are required for those who have not had COVID-19 vaccinations.

‘Freedom Must Be Lived: Marion Palfi’s America, 1940-1978’ at Phoenix Art Museum at Phoenix Art Museum
‘Freedom Must Be Lived: Marion Palfi’s America, 1940-1978’ tells the story of Marion Palfi. Palfi visually documented the 20th-century American injustice.
Visitors can view more than 100 photographic prints as well as photo books, magazine spreads and research journals, all from the Center for Creative Photography’s Marion Palfi Archive. Several of these materials have never been exhibited or published.
Free admission hours for First Friday are 3-7 p.m. Masks are strongly encouraged for all visitors.

Amy Sansbury ‘Safety Zone’ at Eye Lounge
Amy Sansbury’s ceramic wall pieces will be on exhibit until Sept. 12. “Safety Zone” depict everyday items such as telephone poles, streetlights, utilities, and road signs used to create symmetrical patterns inspired by the geometric designs of Islamic tile work and the rosettes of Talavera tiles. According to the Eye Lounge website, these works consider where pattern breaks down and becomes uneasy.
First Friday event is 6-9 p.m. Eye Lounge requests that visitors who are not fully vaccinated follow CDC guidelines to wear masks and maintain social distancing while in the gallery.

Free admission at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix
Take your kids to the museum’s latest “Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit,” which lets kids explore an interactive exhibit where they can create artwork using Eric Carle’s techniques, weave their own spider web and complete an obstacle course in the “Very Clumsy Click Beetle Playscape.” The exhibition will be available until Sept. 6.
Masks are required for all guests ages 2 and older regardless of vaccination status. First Friday at the museum will be 5-9 p.m. on Aug. 6.

Free admission at the Heard Museum
Stop by the Heard Museum to check out their current exhibitions including “Small Wonders,” “All at Once: The Gift of Navajo Weaving” and “Larger than Memory: A Digital Experience,” an exhibit featuring two decades of artwork from across the United States and Canada.
All CDC guidelines are enforced. Masks are strongly encouraged for all visitors regardless of vaccination status.
Admission to the museum is free on First Friday from 4-8 p.m.
