An elderly woman was severely burned in a house fire Thursday morning in Phoenix.

Phoenix fire Capt. Rob McDade said other family members made it out of the house, located on the 21 block of East Pierce Street, after fire broke out at about 5 a.m., but the elderly woman remained inside.

Fire crews found the woman sitting in a wheelchair, McDade said. It was estimated that she suffered second- and third-degree burns to 70 percent of her body.

The woman was taken to Maricopa Medical Center for treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
