A man was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition after he was struck Thursday night by a car whose driver later fled the scene, Phoenix police said.

The accident occurred about 8 p.m. at Cave Creek Road and Aire Libre Avenue, which is just south of Bell Road, police said.

After the pedestrian was struck, the driver initially remained at the scene but later left, police said.

Witnesses described the vehicle as a newer model, black Nissan Altima, with possible front-end damage on the passenger side, police said.

Police are asking anyone information to contact the Phoenix Police Department.

Cave Creek Road was closed between Bell Road and Paradise Lane on Thursday night while the incident was investigated.
