A man was arrested on suspicion of intentionally driving his vehicle into a man and critically injuring him outside a Walmart in Surprise on Monday night, officials said.

Chet Becker Jr., 19, was taken into custody after police found a man had been hit in the parking lot of the Walmart Neighborhood Market near Reems and Greenway roads around 8:45 p.m. Monday, said Sgt. Tim Klarkowski of the Surprise Police Department.

According to court records, the incident happened after Becker’s girlfriend confronted him in the parking lot because he was on his way to meet another woman.

Becker then drove away with the other woman, records say. Becker returned to the parking lot less than 10 minutes later to speak with his girlfriend, but the girlfriend drove off, according to records.

However, the girlfriend’s stepfather also was in the parking lot and had followed Becker as he drove away. Records say that when Becker returned, the stepfather got out of his car and the two started arguing about how the girlfriend had been treated.

The stepfather then walked in front of Becker’s car; Becker accelerated and hit him, court records said.

After hitting the man and pinning him under his car, Becker told detectives that he tried to move his car but it wouldn’t move. Becker then got out of his car and fled on foot. He told detectives that he yelled “call the cops” as he ran, records show.

Becker was caught by police and arrested a short time later.

The injured stepfather was in critical condition in a medically-induced coma Tuesday, according to court records.

Becker was booked into Maricopa County’s Fourth Avenue Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault and leaving the scene of a collision involving serious bodily injury, records show. His bond is set at $250,000 and his next court hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Aug. 21.
