It was late Friday evening when Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo finally sat down in the interview room at Chase Field.
He took his cap off, sighed and slightly shook his head. Tired, someone asked?
“Mentally,” Lovullo replied.
No one could blame him. The Diamondbacks had just authored perhaps their most dramatic victory of the year, a 6-5 win over the Washington Nationals that lasted three hours and 23 minutes and ended with a walk-off Brandon Drury single through a drawn-in Washington infield.
It was only July 21, but it felt like October baseball.
“Exciting game,” Lovullo said. “A very emotional game.”
Where to start? How about the back-to-back-to-back homers the Diamondbacks hit off Washington starter Max Scherzer in the first inning? That’s right. Against arguably the best right-handed pitcher in baseball, David Peralta, A.J. Pollock and Jake Lamb blasted three straight home runs to lead off the game.
“Not something you ever expect to lead off the game with three consecutive home runs,” Lovullo said.
How rare is the feat? It was only the fifth time it’s happened in major-league history. The last team to do so was the Baltimore Orioles in 2012 against the Texas Rangers. Even more stunning: The Diamondbacks did it against Scherzer, who came into the game with an 11-5 record and a 2.01 ERA. In his previous four starts, Scherzer had given up five earned runs combined. The Diamondbacks scored four runs off him in the first inning.
“He’s so tough,” Pollock said. “We did a great job getting his pitch count up and also putting runs up.”

Peralta, Pollock and Lamb went a combined 8 for 13 with three RBIs and five runs scored. They became the first trio in franchise history to have a home run and a double in the same game.
Lovullo said the Diamondbacks weren’t trying to get to Scherzer before he settled in and got into a rhythm.
“That really wasn’t talked about in pre-game,” Lovullo said … “I think the bonus was we jumped on him early and didn’t really allow him to really get into any rhythm.”
The Diamondbacks led 5-0 after two innings, but the Nationals kept chipping away and when Anthony Rendon scored on a Wilmer Difo groundout in the eighth inning the game was tied at 5-5 and Arizona faced the possibility of losing a game on a night it knocked out Scherzer after five innings and on a night when the Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs all lost.
But Fernando Rodney retired the order in the top of the ninth – thanks in part to a spectacular defensive play by shortstop Ketel Marte on a rocket ground ball by Bryce Harper – and in the bottom of the ninth, Pollock led off with a line drive to right center and hustled into third for a triple.
As he slid into the bag he pumped his fist. Take that, groin injury.
Washington manager Dusty Baker then intentionally walked Lamb and Paul Goldschmidt to load the bases. After Gregor Blanco flew out to shallow left, Drury came up. He was 0 for 3 in the game after going 3 for 18 on Arizona’s recent road trip to Atlanta and Cincinnati.
He worked the count to 2-1 against hard-throwing left-handed reliever Enny Romero and then poked the single to right, scoring Pollock and setting off a wild celebration in the stands and on the field.
“When you’re kind of battling a little bit, to get a big hit like that feels good. Hopefully I can build off that and keep going,” Drury said.
As his postgame press conference neared its end after a long evening, Lovullo was asked what he told his players. His eyes were red from exhaustion.
“Let’s go get a cheeseburger,” he said.
