D-Backs stranded
The Diamondbacks put runners on in the seventh and eighth but failed to convert both times.
In the seventh, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt struck out to end the inning with runners on first and second. And in the eighth, third baseman Jake Lamb led off with a walk but second baseman Chris Owings bounced into a double play before catcher Chris Iannetta struck out.
Reds move ahead
The Reds went up 2-1 in the sixth on a Scott Schebler double that scored Adam Duvall. Right fielder David Peralta slipped as he tracked the ball and had to chase it as it went past him.
Right before Schebler’s double, Eugenio Suarez was ejected after arguing with home plate umpire Brian O’Nora after a called third strike.
Arizona came close to tying it in the bottom half of the sixth with Goldschmidt leading off with a single and Lamb walking, but Goldschmidt was tagged out at home as he tried to score on an Owings single.
Pollock homers
The Diamondbacks tied it at 1 in the third on a home run to right by center fielder A.J. Pollock, his first long ball since rejoining the team July 4 after a stint on the disabled list with a strained right groin.
Earlier in the third, the Reds opened the scoring on an RBI single from first baseman Joey Votto.
In the fourth, Pollock followed up his offensive contribution with a sliding catch against Schebler. Earlier in the game, Goldschmidt also made a slick defensive play when he jumped up to pull down a line drive from Suarez.
Rotation set
Right-hander Taijuan Walker will start the Diamondbacks’ first game after the All-Star break Friday in Atlanta against the Braves, with left-hander Patrick Corbin going Saturday and right-hander Zack Godley slotting Sunday.
Manager Torey Lovullo announced the team’s rotation for its next series Sunday, and it’s designed this way to give All-Stars Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray rest coming out of the break.
Ready to go
Lovullo stressed the importance of Sunday’s finale before the break but also the first game back after the layoff. He didn’t sense the team was distracted Sunday.
“I think our guys have done a really good job all year long not looking beyond today, something I’ve asked them to do,” he said. “They’re a tough group. They’re a smart group. They know how important today’s game is, and they’ll be prepared.”

Corbin gave up three runs in 4 2/3 innings against the Dodgers last week, allowing seven hits and walking two. It snapped a string of three consecutive quality starts. … Right-handed hitters have given him trouble this season, hitting .317/.367/.524 off him. … Corbin faced the Reds once last season, tossing two innings in relief. He hasn’t started against them since 2015. … Bailey missed most of the past two seasons following Tommy John surgery and other elbow problems, and needed an elbow cleanup this February. He’s had three surgeries on his elbow sine August 2014. … This will be his fourth start of the year. His first two were awful, but his most recent was a big step in the right direction. He gave up just one run in six innings against the Rockies at Coors Field.
