SAN DIEGO – For the second night in a row, the Diamondbacks clobbered the opposing starting pitcher, jumped to a huge early lead and cruised to a convincing victory, demolishing the worst of what appears to be several bad teams in the National League.

Their 9-1 victory on Saturday night against the San Diego Padres – a team they’ve outscored 19-2 in the first two games of this series – was their fifth consecutive win overall, following a three-game series sweep against a New York Mets team that the Diamondbacks caught at what might have been low point of the Mets’ season.

That’s not to take anything away from what they’ve accomplished; the wins all count the same in the end. It’s just that the Diamondbacks have been doing what good teams are supposed to do: They haven’t been missing the layups.

BOX SCORE: Diamondbacks 9, Padres 1

“The Mets, they’re obviously a good team, and they’re going through some troubles, some injuries right now,” said Diamondbacks lefty Robbie Ray, who tossed 7 2/3 shutout innings on Saturday night at Petco Park.

“Taking advantage of that series, and then coming out here and taking advantage of this series, too, taking the first two games, is huge. That’s what you’re trying to do, go into every series to win it.”

By and large, the Diamondbacks have been doing a lot of that this season. At 26-18, they own the league’s third-best record. At plus-51, they have the second-best run differential. But, for what it’s worth, they’re 11-10 against teams .500 or better and 15-8 against losing teams.

And no team appears to be worse than the Padres. Not only do they have the worst record in the league at 15-30, they also have the NL’s worst run differential, having been outscored by 89 runs through 45 games, putting them on pace to be outscored by 320 runs this season.

BICKLEY: D-Backs hit a home run with ‘summer pass’ ticket deal

For perspective, the worst mark over the past five seasons belongs to the 2013 Houston Astros, who allowed 238 more runs than they scored and finished with a 51-111 record.

Though the Diamondbacks have struggled to hit on the road for the early part of the season, they’ve at least begun to reverse that trend the past two days, racking up 30 hits, including 11 for extra bases, against the hapless Padres pitching staff, doing so in a difficult hitting environment.

“We don’t care who we’re going to play against,” Diamondbacks right fielder David Peralta said. “We’re just going to be ready. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is, we’re just going to be ready to do our job and play the game hard.”

MORE: Zack Godley: Pitch mix helps explain success

In the first against Padres starter Luis Perdomo, the Diamondbacks got a two-run single from Paul Goldschmidt, an RBI double from Jake Lamb and a two-run homer from Chris Herrmann as they jumped to a 5-0 lead.

It was 7-0 by the end of the second, and Ray had little trouble making the lead stand. He gave up just two hits and three walks, a particularly impressive performance given that he’d struggled in his past two starts.
