The Diamondbacks have fired hitting coach Darnell Coles and his assistant, Eric Hinske, the first significant changes the club has made as its losing skid stretches into its sixth week.
The team announced on Thursday afternoon that it had “parted ways” with the two coaches. They will be replaced by Triple-A Reno hitting coach Rick Short and major-league run-production coordinator Drew Hedman, who had been a sort of third hitting coach alongside Coles and Hinske.
The Diamondbacks are 5-30 since May 4, a stretch in which they are hitting .223/.290/.341 as a team. Their .631 OPS during that span is the worst mark in the majors.
The Diamondbacks have lost a franchise record 19 consecutive road games, the fourth-longest streak in baseball history. They have lost 21 of 23 games overall.
Coles and Hinske were in their third seasons in their respective positions.
The Diamondbacks’ position-player group has struggled to stay healthy at points this season but has been largely intact in recent weeks, a point CEO Derrick Hall made during a radio appearance on Thursday morning.
“With the exception of (right fielder) Kole Calhoun, the entire position player group is back,” Hall said on his weekly appearance on Arizona Sports’ 98.7’s Doug & Wolf Show. “And they’re still not getting it done. I think when you look at this team individually and you look at these players individually, they’re good players. Collectively, they just have not played well together. That’s the head scratcher. … When you are near last in every offensive category, that’s a problem.”
