They lost eight leads through their first five games and have been struggling as a pitching staff. San Francisco’s 5.98 team ERA is second-worst in the National League behind the Nationals’ 6.40. On Sunday, the Giants signed outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. to a minor league contract. He was released by the Blue Jays on April 2. The Diamondbacks will miss Giants ace Madison Bumgarner, who carried a perfect game against them into the sixth inning and pitched his 15th career complete game on Saturday.
