Ketel Marte was one of four Diamondbacks hitters to take Clayton Kershaw deep in Game 1 on Friday night. He apparently was not impressed by what he saw out the Dodgers’ ace.

“They say the ball doesn’t carry well in this ballpark,” Marte told USA TODAY Sports in Spanish. “I hope we face him in Arizona so we don’t hit four off him but eight.”

Marte has had two impressive games so far this postseason. He had three hits, including a pair of triples, in Wednesday’s wild-card game victory over the Colorado Rockies. He had two more hits on Friday night, including a line-drive homer off Kershaw with one out in the top of the seventh.

The comment stands out on a Diamondbacks team filled with players who are nearly always guarded and respectful with their remarks, particularly when talking about opposing players.

Corbin lined up for Game 4 start

Once Zack Godley made an appearance in Friday night’s Game 1, it became apparent the Diamondbacks were pointing lefty Patrick Corbin toward a start in Game 4.

“Patrick has had a lot of effectiveness at home against the Dodgers,” manager Torey Lovullo said Saturday, “and we just felt like if we did get to a Game 4 situation … that it was going to be a really good remedy, a really good solution, for us.”

Lovullo cautioned that if Corbin is needed in relief on Saturday, the Diamondbacks wouldn’t hesitate to use him and then change gears with their Game 4 starter.

As for the decision to send Godley to the bullpen, Lovullo said he liked Godley’s versatility and his ability to fill multiple roles in the bullpen – i.e., that of a long man or a shorter-burst reliever.

“His versatility may have maybe hurt his chances of being a starter,” Lovullo said. “But we needed somebody as versatile as him to be in the bullpen or potentially give us as much length as he did.”

Lineup changes

As expected, the Diamondbacks gave catcher Chris Iannetta the start in Game 2 over Jeff Mathis and got Jake Lamb back in the lineup against lefty Rich Hill, whom he has started against four times this season.

The only mild surprise was his decision to go with the left-handed hitting Daniel Descalso over Brandon Drury at second base. Lovullo has been fairly consistent in going with Drury against left-handed pitchers – and, in fact, Descalso has never faced Hill.

But Drury had a rough night in Game 1, going 0 for 4 with two strikeouts and two double-play groundouts. Descalso, meanwhile, put a good at-bat together against Kenley Jansen as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning to draw a one-out walk.

Lovullo mentioned Hill’s reverse splits – that is, he’s better against righties than lefties – as a factor in the decision.

He also talked about his trust in Descalso’s ability to not “be affected by the moment.”
