Shipley takes the ball in place of RHP Zack Greinke, whose start was pushed to Friday to better line him up for next week’s wild card game. … Shipley has made four appearances in relief this month, giving up one run on four hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. … He has started two games, giving up eight runs (seven earned) in nine innings, with both starts coming in May and June. … Samardzija gave up four runs in 4 1/3 innings on Friday against the Dodgers. … He had a strong eight-start stretch from July 26 through Sept. 2, when he logged a 2.60 ERA in 55 1/3 innings. … In four starts against the Diamondbacks this season, Samardzija has a 5.13 ERA. He faced them on Sept. 15, giving up three runs in eight innings in a 3-2 loss.
