The Diamondbacks added some suddenly much-needed infield depth to their roster on Monday by acquiring infielder Adam Rosales from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for a low-level pitching prospect.
Rosales, 34, has played parts of 10 seasons in the majors. He was hitting.234/.273.346 in 205 at-bats for the A’s this season.
With Nick Ahmed out with a broken hand, Chris Owings suffering a fractured finger on Sunday and Ketel Marte returning to the Dominican Republic on Monday following the death of his mother, the Diamondbacks were in sudden need of help at shortstop.

Owings was placed on the 60-day DL to make room for Rosales on the 40-man roster.
Rosales could help in another area in which the Diamondbacks are weak: hitting left-handed pitching. He’s hitting .276 with a .752 OPS against lefties this year, and he slugged six homers in 97 at-bats against lefties last season.
In exchange for Rosales, the Diamondbacks parted with right-hander Jeferson Mejia, 22, who had a 5.90 ERA in 29 innings split between short-season Hillsboro and Low-A Kane County.
Mejia, who has a big arm that has not translated to good results, was part of the deal three years ago that sent catcher Miguel Montero to the Chicago Cubs.
The Diamondbacks were also said to be looking for relief help on the trade market in advance of Monday’s 1 p.m. non-waiver trade deadline.
