Why did Josh Jackson not work out for Boston?

Losing is like sandpaper. It grates on you, wears you down, rubs you raw.

The Suns must protect Devin Booker at all costs.

Not from opponents looking to get under his skin or enemy fans goading him to miss free throws in his own building. They must protect him from the frustration of toiling for a futile franchise, where a culture of competitive failure might change everything he believes about playing basketball in Phoenix.

If the timeline claims the best young NBA star to hit Arizona since Amar’e Stoudemire, the Suns’ current plan will be mocked for decades to come, and they will be guilty of malfeasance, mismanagement and malpractice.

Signs of trouble bubbled to the surface in Monday’s loss at Talking Stick Resort Arena, where Lakers fans outnumbered Suns fans in voice and spirit. Booker played a spectacular game but earned a technical foul for overreacting to an official’s whistle. He listened to Lakers fans taunt him before shooting free throws. And at one point, Booker walked menacingly toward the enemy sideline, angry at all the chirping he heard from the visiting bench.

That should not be happening at home. And it’s heartbreaking that one of the loudest sounds to come from the arena on Monday night occurred when rookie Lonzo Ball made his first 3-point shot during the third quarter. At the time, Booker was deep into another vintage performance, on his way to another 30-point game. The juxtaposition was pathetic and poisonous.

At the moment, Booker remains fully vested. He loves being the face of the franchise, treating the designation as a responsibility and an honor. He is just like Diamondbacks reliever Archie Bradley, whose commitment to Arizona brought pride back to Chase Field. He is the opposite of Eric Bledsoe, who treated his situation with lip service, a selfish, disingenuous player who is only happy when getting paid.

During a recent interview with ESPN, Booker expressed long-term optimism, predicting the Suns will “be in a good spot” in a few years. But he also said he received over 50 texts from players across the NBA following the Bledsoe debacle.

“Other players around the league are like, ‘What’s going on over there?’“ Booker said. “A lot happened at once. And it’s all over television. That’s all I heard about.”

With other players lamenting his situation and potentially luring him elsewhere, how long will Booker’s affinity for the Valley endure? Especially when the losses mount, when there is little help on the horizon, with a playoff drought that is currently seven years and counting?

This is where the Suns’ current caretakers must change their business model. They need maturity to replace petulance. They need vision to address problems before they become dumpster fires. And most of all, they must empower Booker and reward his loyalty. They must make their cause his cause.

This doesn’t land on the shoulders of Robert Sarver, a great banker, a failing NBA owner and a testament to the beauty of sports. It’s a world where money matters. But only so much.

RELATED: Devin Booker could see more time as point guard

In the profession he chose, Sarver just reported his 29th consecutive quarter of “record operating earnings” with Western Alliance Bancorporation. He said during an earnings teleconference that third-quarter net income was $82.9 million and company stock was up 20 percent in share price. And with more than $18 billion in assets, his primary business was ranked fourth on the Forbes 2017 “Best Banks in America” list.

In this profession, Sarver is consistently ranked among the worst owners in the NBA. Former Suns player Paul Shirley recently wrote an essay where he said the owner “was born on third, but thinks he hit a triple.” It’s so bad that one disgruntled fan started a GoFundMe page just to purchase a billboard that reads #SarverOut.

That fan, Alex Smith, raised $3,655, outpacing his goal of $1,650. In his latest online update, Smith claims Clear Channel decided not to run the billboards because they were no longer in the business of attack ads.

But this problem isn’t on Sarver, who has copped to his mistakes and his impatience. The only recent sign of heavy-handed involvement came during the firing of Earl Watson, who said the owner did all the talking during termination proceedings while General Manager Ryan McDonough merely wished him good luck.

Instead, this is on the team’s personnel department. Dragan Bender has made progress coming off his best game as a professional. But Josh Jackson is raw and out of control, showing signs of losing confidence. Marquese Chriss is prone to bad body language, letting one mistake grow like compound interest. The team lacks a point guard capable of distributing and facilitating at an elite level. Only T.J. Warren is much of a help, a great scorer who doesn’t even bother attempting 3-point shots.

I believe in Jay Triano, a head coach who has the wisdom and temperament to lead the Suns out of the darkness. I believe in McDonough’s ability to organize and execute a draft.

But Booker is the key to everything. He is ultra-competitive, with an on-court ferocity that belies his polished appearance. He will not cope well with prolonged wretchedness, the kind that can stigmatize his career.

This team better find an answer and some real help for Booker in the very near future. Before all this losing costs them the greatest loss of all.
