A man walking through a desert area in north Phoenix contacted authorities Friday when he came across what appeared to be human remains.

Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detectives launched an investigation north of 11th Street and Alameda Road after they confirmed what the man located was human remains, according to MCSO Sgt. Bryant Vanegas. The area is east of Seventh Street and Happy Valley Road.

Additional remains were located on Saturday, which were transported to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s office, where an autopsy is scheduled to be performed Tuesday, Vanegas said.

It is unknown if the remains are of a male or female, but the investigation is ongoing, Vanegas said in an emailed statement.
