A Gilbert resident was arrested Thursday on suspicion of attacking a female Lyft driver with a handgun Wednesday in Gilbert, according to a court document.

The Lyft driver picked up Derrick Caver, 18, on Wednesday afternoon, and police say she was attacked by Caver after he told her to pull over the vehicle, according to a probable cause report filed by police in Superior Court. The location was redacted in the report.

After the car was stopped, Caver began to strangle the driver from the back seat with one hand, produced a handgun with the other hand, and placed the gun into the side of the driver’s belly, according to the court document.

The driver attempted to fight back. Caver got out of the car, struck the driver, took her phone and fled on foot, the report said.

During the incident, the driver was having difficulty breathing for about 30 seconds, the report said. The driver also said Caver ordered her to drive around the neighborhood and told her she was going to die, according to the document.

The police identified and arrested Caver on Thursday at his residence on suspicion of the attack.

Caver admitted to police he was in the Lyft car, but he denied assaulting or robbing the driver or having a firearm, the document stated.

The driver has difficulty swallowing and “is traumatized and very scared due to the randomness of the incident,” according to the court document.

Caver was charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping , and carrying a deadly weapon while under the age of 21, according to the report.
