Torey Lovullo walked to the mound to talk to Zack Greinke.

That in itself was unusual. Normally, when Lovullo makes a mound visit during a game it’s to ask for the ball and go to his bullpen. But on Wednesday, with one out in the seventh inning and the Diamondbacks nursing a 2-1 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers, he wanted to ask Greinke how he felt.

Greinke had given up a leadoff double to Cody Bellinger to start the inning, and catcher Yasmani Grandal followed with a hard-hit line drive that A.J. Pollock ran down in center field. Greinke was only at 89 pitches but Lovullo was concerned enough that he left the dugout rather than pitching coach Mike Butcher.

“I just wanted to go out and see how he was doing and look him in the eye,” Lovullo said. “He said, ‘I feel as good as I’ve felt all game. I feel great.’ He’s our ace. It didn’t make sense for me to take him out of the game at that point.”

BOX SCORE: Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 2

Three batters later, the Dodgers had scored two runs off Greinke to secure a 3-2 victory heading into Thursday’s series finale.

“A tough game to lose,” Lovullo said.

Up until the seventh inning, Greinke had tamed the Dodgers, allowing just one hit, a Bellinger solo homer in the second inning. He had walked four batters but he was winning the pitcher’s duel against Los Angeles starter Alex Wood.

Then it fell apart.

Bellinger ripped a middle-of-the-plate fastball for a double. Greinke got Grandal and Chase Utley for two quick outs and needed to retire center fielder Joc Pederson to end his night with the lead. Greinke already had struck out Pederson twice, but with a 1-0 count he tried to throw a change-up down and away. Instead, it stayed up and Pederson laced it for a double to score Bellinger and tie the game at 2-2.

“The pitch to Joc was the worst one,” said Greinke, who lost for the first time at Chase Field after going 10-0. “Down the middle and up for a change-up. That’s a bad location.”

Lovullo then decided to pitch to Yasiel Puig even though Wood was on deck, and the Dodgers would have gone to their bench for a pinch-hitter. His reasoning: He didn’t want Los Angeles to get any more runners on base – “next thing you know you’re several runs behind” – and he thought Greinke had handled Puig, even though Puig was 0 for 1 with a walk up to that point.

“I thought he was going to execute his pitches, get that out, walk off the mound and get a chance to win the game,” Lovullo said.

Instead, Puig hit a single through the right side of the infield to drive in Pederson for the game-winning run.

“I thought Zack threw the ball very, very well,” Lovullo said. “He told me he felt great and I wanted him to go out there and finish that inning. Unfortunately it didn’t happen.”
