DeAndre Hopkins is nearing a contract extension with the Arizona Cardinals, according to a report from the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport tweeted Monday: “Sources: The #AZCardinals and star WR DeAndre Hopkins are closing in on an agreement on a contract extension to properly compensate their star. Hopkins did the deal himself.”

The details of the contract extension are not yet known, but the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson reported that it is expected to make him the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL.

Hopkins entered Monday ninth on the list of the highest paid wide receivers in the NFL  with an average annual salary of $16.2 million.

Hopkins is under contract for three more seasons on a deal that will pay him $12.5 million this year, $13.5 million in 2021 and $13.9 million in 2022.

Hopkins, however, had been seeking to re-work his deal in Houston for more money before being traded from the Texans to Arizona.

Hopkins was recently named to the Top 10 of the NFL’s Top 100 list for 2020, which is voted on by players.

He was the No. 2 wide receiver on the list.

Hopkins missed some practices in camp and some speculation surfaced that he was holding out for a new contract.

The wide receiver quieted that speculation with a tweet: “No Deandre Hopkins is not holding out. From the source.”

“He’s working, getting better each day and I expect him back soon,” Kingsbury told reporters at the time.

“He’s been so productive in this league. He’s a pro’s pro when it comes to knowing what it takes to have his body ready and his mind ready to perform at a high level Week 1,” Kingsbury added. “You’d obviously like Kyler to get a few more reps with him, but they got some great work in this summer and he’s a guy who is going to present himself well on the field for a young quarterback. We don’t worry too much about it, knowing what he’s done in this league and what he’s about.”
