Cardinals running back David Johnson announced via Twitter that the cast on his left wrist was removed on Monday, nine weeks after he suffered a dislocation in the season opener.

Johnson has said he would like to return this season, no matter the team’s record. But that remains questionable.

He will begin rehabilitation now to restore strength and range of motion.

Coach Bruce Arians has expressed doubt that Johnson will come back this season.

If the Cardinals (4-5) are out of playoff contention by the time Johnson is ready to play, the team might determine it doesn’t make sense for him to play this season.

Johnson suffered a dislocated wrist against the Lions in the first game of the season. He underwent surgery and was expected to be out two to three months.

Since then, the Cardinals have lost a host of players to injuries, including starting quarterback Carson Palmer, who broke his arm in a game against the Rams.

Palmer’s backup, Drew Stanton, suffered a sprained knee in the Thursday Night Football loss to the Seahawks and might miss Sunday’s game against the Texans.

In addition, the Cardinals lost two starters and a key reserve to injuries against Seattle.

Cardinals left tackle D.J. Humphries and safety Tyvon Branch suffered right knee injuries in the first quarter. Tight end Ifeanyi Momah suffered a cracked ankle in the second half.

The Cardinals placed Humphries, Branch and Momah on injured reserve Monday afternoon.

The team re-signed quarterback Matt Barkley, who was with the Cardinals in 2015. If Stanton can’t play, Barkley could back up Blaine Gabbert against the Texans.

Another quarterback, Mike Bercovici, is on the practice squad.

The team also promoted safety Harlan Miller from the practice squad on Monday. A sixth-round pick in 2016, Miller played in two games last year and has spent this season on the practice squad.
